The Cévennes national park is probably my favorite of all the places I listed here. Very forested, lightly populated, great wildlife and biodiversity, rugged terrain, it is actually quite big (for France) but the eastern part that is closest to Avignon is already very beautiful. It's UNESCO listed. It used to be a stronghold of Protestantism and war broke out in the early 18th century. As a consequence the army had to build a fuckton of roads on the mountain sides that are nowadays used as hiking routes that offer breathtaking views, pic related
Also north of Avignon there are the Baronnies, I don't here about this place often at all but from all the pics I've seen there are no doubt great hike as well
