It wasn't about his craft of science and research itself but about raising funds for relevant projects and keeping the team together while the research funding policies started to have also political connotations. He had to face too many people up there who seemed suddenly to "know better" with no actual knowledge on scientific research whatsoever. Some of those cases were just incredibly dumb. After about 8 years of that my buddy simply gave up. He couldn't do it anymore.
