I live in northeast arkansas and made my first garden this year. i just dug a big plot, added some halfway done compost, and planted my crops. met with mid success, corn did well but didnt get enough nitrogen so its a bit stunted, radishes were planted too densely and i didnt get a great yield, potatos have been raped by bugs over the weekend while i was away, but i had a lot of fun and refuse to be deterred!!
Ive got some compost saved up from lawn clippings, and a big bag of crimson clover cover crop seeds. i know clover doesnt do well in the summer, but if i plant it and keep it covered to prevent drying out, and keep it well watered after it takes root, would it still make a decent cover crop until next season? if i do this, should i add compost before planting, or will the clover do fine without it, i would like to continue growing my compost pile if possible, to save up for next year. any other advice regarding soil enrichment would be helpful, im dealing with mostly clay and little to no organic material in the soil at this point, but im hoping to fix that with clover and compost over the next 6-8 months.
