I find the new ones with all their mag brake bullshit to be better to fine tune to the exact weight you're casting, letting you cast further. The downside to all that technology is usually a more delicate reel that's harder to work on. My older reels like this abu are absolute tanks, easy to work on, easy to find parts for and easily modified. I have some 12lb on this 4600 and it's just perfect for bass, mangrove snapper, even small reds and snook if i put an appropriate leader on it. I keep it on my 7'2 glass blank my uncle wrapped for me, it's just such an enjoyable setup. The older reels feel like they were built so much better, but they're usually very heavy as a consequence
