Cheap, sharp as fuck but very visibly a long, fixed blade knife. I've never had weird encounters with people but I feel safer knowing its right on my belt and even just innocently adjusting my shirt to expose it could be a deterrence. Also a big, bright red thing of bear spray on my bag. Too bad my state sucks ass at letting us carry concealed.
Also get a dash cam. Even if you have some shit ass car you can get a cheap $100 one which records the front, rear and interior. I dont have to worry about break ins but it saved my ass when some guy did a break check/insurance scam attempt on me and I hit him. USAA fought like hell for me and ended up not paying a penny while the guys insurance repaid mine for the repairs and he got a handful of tickets.
