I use one of these in the field pretty regularly.
The value is in having something you can put on to keep wind and rain off you when static or very slow moving, but when you do not have the time to put on goretex, or you will need to then move off in a hurry.
Like a brief, movable shelter. I also use it as a ground tarp under my rollmat.
