I have a German Shepherd. He's very obedient and hikes well, doesn't chase animals or leave my side unless he sees a stream to drink from.
I would say the only cons would be his coat being so thick and he requires a lot of food to be carried while we backpack since he's a big, growing dog with a high metabolism. We hiked a portion of the CDT where I live in Colorado and he did awesome.
