"Temperature/Plant Hardiness Zone" It allows you to get a better understanding of your local climate and weather patterns as it relates to the average coldest temperature it is supposed to get during winter. That helps you determine first and last frost dates, when to plants, what to plant, and where to start/sow your seeds. Like here in Zone 5 I need to start many of my crops early indoors if I want to grow longer season crops like sweet potatoes, luffa, or just peppers and tomatoes.
