As for communications... I also use cellphones with WalkieTalkie app. Tested on several phones and works for few dozens meters. This is for backup
Instead of getting WalkieTalkies you should consider picrel handheld shortwave. Most preppers favor it. Not much heavier than WalkieTalkie and can also listen to AM/FM radio and... WalkieTalkies with some tuning
I would only get WalkieTalkies for kids as it's easier to use, no programming needed
