Nutrient excess or deficiency will be reflected in the coloration of the leaves. You can look up leaf charts that illustrate what they look like. Next, pull up the plant and look at the roots. Healthy, white roots indicate a healthy microbial community while rotted, brown roots indicate the opposite. Texture can be determined with hand tests, and finally your soil pH can be established by using red cabbage juice. I'll post the relevant images
