I've never had a hot smoke in a clay pipe, albeit I've never owned a false clay pipe either. See, maybe you've had run ins with porcelain """clay""" pipes which don't possess any of the charm of a true clay pipe except that it mimics the look.

It also helps that clays are incredibly low maintenance likewise. No need to run a pipe cleaner through unless you have one with a genuine stem (which also solves the clenching problem). And just look at how dashing they look! The cobs might have their own corner on charm but the classic tavern or cutty is just brimming with history.
