The US has the worst homicide rate amongst industrialized nations by miles, and it is entirely fueled by handgun violence, as the posted picture shows. Anything short of an outright ban on handguns will do nothing to deter crime in America. And before you piss and moan about "b-b-ut only da criminals will have da guns!" this ludicrous notion is disproved in every industrialized nation, where gun ownership increases the amount of gun violence and (most importantly) the converse is true, where a decrease in ownership decreases gun violence.
The vast majority of guns that are used in crime are sold by a third party to the criminal, after being bought legally. There is no giant "Black Market R Us" where a criminal obtains a weapon. If they don't buy it themselves, then someone else legally buys it and sells it to them.
Banning handguns, completely, is the fastest way to bringing the US from 100th+ worst murder-rate in the world down to something more normal, like the countries who have 1/4 our homicide rate.
