if you had to carry a single piece of metal for survival you'd be best off with what they came up with when metal was most expensive and that's a simple haftable wedge with a slightly fan-shaped blade. It can be an axe, it can be an adze, it can be a chisel, you can scrape hides in a frame with it, you can slice veggies. This whole axe vs knife debate is silly because today you can easily carry both and they are both cheap, just carry a slip-fit axe head and make handle wherever if carrying weight is an issue. Batoning is a viable technique but it is a woodworking technique, not a survival skill per se.
