I love restoring axes and hatchets, you can find some nice stuff for dirt cheap at garage sales and estate sales if you keep your eye out. I have a whole box of axe heads waiting to be restored that I paid maybe $20 for.
Here's one of my favorites, paid $1 for the head and $15 for a hultafors handle, same size and weight as a gransfors bruks Scandinavian forest axe. There's a whole nother level of pride of ownership when you put something together yourself.
