Even if you don't backpack, I really recommend day hiking the Emerald Peak trail (pic related). It gets you to the highest elevation in the region and is just hard enough to keep a lot of normies away, and you get to traverse a ton of different ecotones. You from desert to juniper-oak woodland to something like alpine desert almost. Really cool shit. Across the park you can even get lots of riparian ecosystems since the Rio Grande is right there.
The wildlife is fucking awesome, especially this time of year. Tons of birds and whatnot. Javelinas are cool to see, and there are black bears and cougars as well, though you'd be lucky to see either. Fuck I want to go back right now just thinking about it.
