Its better to carry 70 lbs of gear and be proficient at carrying it than to try to skate by with less gear. Especially if you are trying to be more mobile. If you arent going to move around much, you can bring even more gear or less and just make more gear wherever your camp site is. Unless you are planning to be in a situation where you are being hunted, its pointless to copy the military. The military is not self sufficient and often sacrifices comfort for expediency.
