Get some zero-drop shoes and you'll avoid a lot of injuries in the long term. I would avoid zero-cushion minimalist shoes like vivobarefoot or viibram five-fingers to start with and take a look at New Balances minimus line, Altra or Merrell.
I used to get terrible shin splints, runners knee and minor lower back pain. Since I started running in a more natural way with minimal shoes, my problems have disappeared. Running is lighter, more fluid, more enjoyable and I can run further.
