You can do it a LOT cheaper than that, but you have to avoid a lot of the hiker vortexes along the way and make good use of hiker boxes. I expect if I was to thru-hike the AT again I could do it on closer to $2000 without sacrificing too much on creature comforts like cheap beer in town and tobacco.
