A Leatherman will serve you just fine for the 99% of times you are on the go and you need a knife or a pair of pliers. The fact that a Leatherman has a bit driver and file built into it makes it more useful than carrying separate pliers and a knife alone unless you knew the job at hand would only require pliers and a knife..
I like the Charge TTI. It's kind of pricy and it's basically a gauche version of the Wave but it is nice to use.
