I need advice on reading a river and hooking fish. I have caught catfish before on worms and bobber, but now it's feeling more like it was luck. I've been out to this spot 6 times now and I haven't caught anything besides a freshwater drum and mudskipper. I know cats come out in the morning and afternoon, but I can't hook anything and now I am questioning if I even read this river correctly. The outside of the river should be the deepest part where the bottom dwellers are right? The red line I marked is how the water current flows around in this spot. So this slow moving loop should be a prime feeding spot right?
I get the most bites on shelled shrimp marinated in garlic powder and chili oil, and I bottom fish with a Carolina rig and the rod on a holder. When I do get a bite, the top of the rod bends heavy for a brief moment and then poof, half my shrimp is bitten off. I can't seem to hook anything. I'm using mix sized catfish circle hooks.
