just to add to the discussion some:
> general purpose outdoor knifei really like my buck #119. six inches of blade is about right for many things, as long as i have a hatchet and a small knife for the other two niches. my dad carries a buck "general" and it is basically a larger version of pic related. i don't need it because it's already an awkward skinner for some spots... then buck makes a good drop-point skinning knife with 4" blade too.
my dad also has a fred bear knife with a nice drop point and a through-hilt whang for the sheath, so no snap necessary & that can be replaced with good cordage. it is our highest quality steel and stays as our best skinner.
