>>469453I thought that too, before I got mine. My kid found a SOG Flash II innacave at Mammoth Cave a couple of years ago. It had been thoroughly abused. After a bit of TLC and putting a proper edge on the blade I've been pretty happy with it despite that serrated portion. He sees me use it now and again (I don't carry it often) and gets all happy he found Dad a knife Dad likes. I'll give it to him when he's old enough I can trust him not to lose it. That knife made me curious about AUS8 steel, though, so I read up on it a bit.
AUS8 is pretty good blade steel if it's given the loving care it deserves when it's hardened and tempered. If you take a few minutes and look up the alloying elements in the two, you will find the only difference between AUS8 and 8Cr13MoV is that AUS8 has 0.4% nickel where 8Cr13MoV has 0.2% nickel. When added in small amounts to stainless steels, nickel improves toughness without sacrificing the ability to hold an edge. AUS8 is a better alloy than 8CR13MoV because it's more resistant to impact and breaking at the same hardness, although the difference will be small. Every knife listed in
