I would practice in several before attempting to make on worth keeping. A good hollow grind takes a lot if grind tone without a good belt sander.
I'd recommend buying a Pre hest treated blank online then spending your time on a nice handle for it. Heat treating a blade **properly ** takes the right equipment and knowledge.
Just my two cents... Order a
Pre made Blank or an AEBL flat stock. Steel laying around the shop will turn into a rust rod if it's not knife grade steel
