The key is to just act like you belong there, when I'm offroading and see people I'll slow down to a walking pace and nod and say thank you when they let me pass. I've never had the cops called on me or even a "Hey, you're not supposed to be here".
But, that's not what we are really talking about here, walking around in full STALKER gear will raise some eyebrows. Best thing to do is find a secluded place, walk up in normal hiking gear and get changed at your camping site.
