Juglans Nigra
Uses: Cherokee used inner bark for smallpox; bark chewed for toothache; bark tea for sores; leaf tea for goiter. Iroquois used bark poultice for headache; inner-bark tea as an emetic, laxative; bark chewed for toothaches. Fruit-husk juice used for ringworm; husk chewed for colic, poultice for inflammation. Leaf tea astringent, insecticidal against bedbugs. Walnut leaves and hulls have traditionally been valued as a tonic and strong antifungal. The seed oil, dipped in a small piece of cotton, was applied for toothache. Leaves used for tuberculosis of lymph nodes (scrofula, King’s evil). Recent scientific studies have found that the leaf extracts have strong antiviral activity against vesicular stomatitis, a protective effect on the vascular system, and an inhibitory effect on certain kinds of tumors. A recent animal study suggests that juglone, a growth inhibitor in the leaves, possesses sedative activity comparable with diazepam (the prescription drug valium). Like Butternut, contains plumbagin, a recent research subject as a novel chemoprotective against against prostate cancer.
