For instance staring down a mountain lion is a good way of telling it "I see you" and turning away will provoke an attack. If a mother bear sees a person near it's cubs do you think it would be less likely to attack if you resisted the temptation to stare at the cute little cubs? The mother would take it as a sign that you're unaware of uninterested in the cubs by not staring at them.
