OC, found these outside the shipyard in Freeland, Washington, in the lawn near pine trees. The open one is about the size of the palm of my hand. A friend of a friend ate a tiny amount of this species once, attempting a "trip." What happened was he threw up, slept for several hours, then woke up hallucinating for 12 hours. He had no desire to repeat the process, probably why they haven't been outlawed. I have been tempted, but put off by the sickness factor. In northern Europe the reindeer eat them and people follow them around, collect reindeer urine somehow, then drink it. Another way to do it is an experienced shaman eats the mushroom, and then people drink his urine. This procedure apparently filters out the nasty side-effects. The Santa Claus myth comes from this mushroom, the red-and-white suit, the "flying" reindeer and so forth.
