By British mess kit I assume you mean one of this style. To me they have the advantage that you can stick them on a campfire really easily without having to worry about them falling over. I've never used a German style one but I guess you'd have to hang it over the fire, right? I dunno, I feel like the broad-based British style would be more versatile, but maybe I'm wrong. I've just ordered a Yugoslav/Serbian kit which is in that upright style and is supposed to be really good - in terms of all fitting together nicely, anyway (there's a water flask that fits inside the mess kit).
