Otherwise, you old timey drugstore/codger type blends also strike a happy medium despite being kind of "flat". Field and Stream Match (the original is discontinued), Edgar G Robinson's Blend, Chatham Manor, Carter Hall, and my personal favorite here lately, Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic.
Don't let the fact that you can buy it at tobacco outlets fool you, SWRA is pretty much my standard by which aromatics are judged in my book. It has some kind of liqueur topping, but the tobacco (a lot of virginia) is there through the entire bowl and it has the wife stamp of approval on the smell front.
