Yeah, in some places, and on some terrain a lot of work is done by "hand" (chainsaws), but A LOT of forest is felled with fairly automated machines like feller bunchers and skidders.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spGBGpHi2fIthis is the logging I'm most familiar with. The operators don't really get out of the cab as far as I know. Their machines can travel to the trees, cut them, de-limb them, and pile them all from the control booth. So, why would they be getting out?
Maybe I shouldn't have said "most loggers", because I really don't know that for sure. But certainly a lot, and in a lot of forest types (i.e. almost all of the boreal forest) logging is not done on foot.
