2) 26 is the field of view, how many meters you can see in 1000m distance. 40 is better than 26, but also needs larger lenses.
3) The lenses and the coating are important for the amount of light collected (cheap stuff fails in dusk/dawn), avoidance of internal reflections (camera lens like effects) and reduction of UV light.
4) You want ideally a nitrogen filled binocular, thst preventd fogging and dusting of the inside, because they have to be gas proof obviously.
I bought a Olympus 8-16x40 Zoom DPS I for 80€ two years ago, the magnification is zoomable from 8 to 16x, which i think is nice, but optional, usually i use the 8x only. The field of view is ok, as is the lens coating. However, no nitrogen at that price, you have to keep it dry and protected.
Problem is it's weight and bulk. The Zeiss Turmon just came, picrel for size comparison.
