One of my favorite aspects of this type of kit is that the items are very multipurpose. I know that you can get versatility from specially made modern gear as well (I have a lovely Hill People Mountain Serape, for example); but it is just so easy with a lot of older stuff. Picrel is layering first with my sheepskin/pillow, then a poncho/tarp, then my web-gear, and then the blanket held with a brooch. Of course, compared to lightweight modern stuff, I probably still end up carrying more weight, but I still find it neat - and I look like a dieselpunk Dunedain.
