Basically you HAVE to pre-heat because if you don't the first bit of fuel in the stove won't vaporize and you'll just get big dirty yellow flame that will just cover your cooking gear in soot and not be very hot.
You should buy a Primus or an MSR by the way. I had a ching chong potatoe version and it was so shitty - My MSR however is fucking GOAT.
