It is actually a feature to allow for easier sharpening, making it much easier to hold a proper angle over a bench stone without having the guard in the way. Not my preference since I am always afraid it would chip but it is a common feature.
I don't really mind the finger notches either, but the saw on the back of the blade kills it for me.
