>>1410816Ive been on the road for the last 2 years now, doing a loop of Australia with my partner. If we keep travelling well and depending on money we will look at shipping the car to another continent. Living on the road was the best life decision I've ever made.
I've converted a Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier for overlanding. Cost me $20k (AUD) for the Troopy which was 75% set up. Then spent a further $10k on mods and setup. Its 4WD which I think is essential for living on the road, you can go anywhere and if your on /out/ i'm assuming you want to get those remote hard to get to spots. While vanlifefags make vans look comfy on instagram, they're severely limited on where you can take them.
Our budget on the road is $500 p/w: $300 on diesel, $120 on food and $80 misc. We always free camp and haven't paid for camping in 2 years. We saved up for a few years before leaving and also worked for 3 months in a remote wilderness lodge to keep us going. We had $40k before we left.
Our biggest unforeseen cost was car repairs. I taught myself to service the Troopy but there is only so much you can do on the road with the limited tools you can carry. Make sure your vehicle is solid before you leave and that you have a good understanding of how it works and how to fix it if SHTF.
