You're looking in the wrong places, but there is truth to what you are saying. The reason is everything went whizbang; blame the ultralightfaggots. When I bought all of my /out/ gear as a kid, I bought a Jansport external frame, a Quest 3 man tent, and a Coleman sleeping bag. It wasn't the best gear, but it was on par with what your average /out/ist was rucking around because it all works. What with all this lightweight high speed material and young urbanite oneupsmanship, space man stuff has become the average gear, and the prices associated with it have become the norm. Do your research, then go to the thrift store and buy older solid gear. I still use most of the shit I bought as a kid in the Scouts.
