I love in the Northeast USA so there isn't an area without trees for 500 miles, unless you're camping on some higher New England/Adirondack peaks above the treeline, which in that case you just camp a little lower, or bring a tent.
There are some portable hammock stands that use trekking poles. They seem complicated though, and I have no use for them. If car camping there is something called a turtledog stand, easy to make and works really well.
