Those Japanese bamboo flutes, shakuhachi and fue, need to be cured for months before you start and most sections of bamboo are busted in some way and unusable. Filing out holes for an ocarina or flute is a lot more fickle than it should be and getting the fipple right is an art. I didn't make this but some kind of lute or skin banjo is honestly easier in a lot of ways. A flat or open back 3 string thing with gut strings and frets would be more doable because it doesn't require a lathe, drill press, heat shaping the bowl on an iron, or other lutherie and woodwind tools. A shamisen could be made in the woods, all you need is the wood for the neck and a cat or possum or something for the drum.
