I bought an ESEE model 4, because I wanted something handier and smaller than the big knives I'm autistically collecting, something I'd actually care to use and bring. A little reality check with myself made me realise that you always carry your knife a ton more than you actually use it.
So that's what I took on my hike this summer, and in seven days I ended up using it all of two times - Once to cut a length of cord to use for a clothesline, and once to get some wood shavings off a log to start a fire. It did do that very well.
No, what I liked the most about it was the sheath. I'm used to having the knife in a belt sheath. That wasn't going to happen this time because I had a dog belt on me, and my pack's hip belt, none of which I could hang the knife on, nor did they leave room for a knife to hang off my pants' belt. However, still wanting the knife to hand, I saw that I could easily clip the sheath upside-down to my pack's shoulder strap without the knife being at risk of falling out. It did look a bit goofy in a mall ninja-way at first, but I came to ignore it after a while, figuring it isn't stupid as long as it works.
I've noticed a bit of rust forming on the clip of the sheath after the trip, but nothing other than that. I think that's pretty fair, since it rained not infrequently.
Very likely be taking it with me again on later trips anyway. I suppose a multitool could do the same job for my use.
I'm back home now, so only stock photo.
