>>136571 cont'd.My 525 handles 75m/h highway, even with knobbies and geared for dualsport riding. I could sumo it; gear it up and put 17" streetbike wheels on it... and probably lose my license shortly thereafter. Thing with the smaller bikes (KTM RFS/XC4's, DRZ, WR, XR) is lack of luggage capacity, tradeoff is excellent performance off-road.
If you're looking for something more street-friendly, and not doing much in the way of offroad riding (forest service roads, improved gravel, maybe some easy dirt two-track (doable in a stock jeep), might also consider a V-strom. There's a bunch of guys locally with them, both the 650 and 1000 variety.
If you're interested in tackling dirt like the majority of posts in this thread, while doing better on the highway than a "dirt bike" DS, might consider the KTM 690 Enduro. Not much cheaper than an Adv, but much better off-road performance than the Adv.
That said, I know a guy who raced his 990 Superenduro in the local harescramble (two-hour MX track + enduro course) race.....
Red KLR in teh middle of the 5 on the left has been from AK to Chile.
