I have had my cast iron get a slight layer of rust on it once or twice (mainly when camping in Wales in winter rain storms) but even a little rust is not at all the end of the world. It took me a while to learn some tricks for seasoning it, such as putting it in cold and heating it up, making sure that oil doesn't pool at the bottom of the pot etc. All the acidity of the tomatoes talk is a very very minor nitpick to me.
