which leads to the other big advantage of how people do their layering systems these days: everything's more modular. if my wind stopping layer is a thick canvas jacket then i can't really use it when its warm. if its a thin nylon trash bag i can wear as much or as little active insulation as i want to. usually something ranging from a tank top to picrel or a fleece, which is also about 4-5oz and packs tiny. it means i can wear the same wind jacket year round in all weather and consoom less shit. didn't used to be able to do that with older gear. size, weight, and raw performance are the main reason everyone moved to using this kind of gear and these kind of layering systems. but the versatility is one of the biggest advantages it holds.
