Although the EPA had intended to increase light truck mpg requirements up to 70 mpg by 2025, that requirement has been repeatedly softened and the required mpg for smaller trucks is only ~45 mpg today, increasing to ~55 in the next few years (2011 Ranger footprint is ~42sqft).
This requirement is still enough to make auto manufacturers lose interest in small trucks though. As I mentioned, these requirements are much looser for full trucks and SUVs.
