>>1229085Been fully insulin-dependent type 1 since 1994 (basically my whole life). /out/ is complicated, but it's so worth it.
If you want to push yourself, I highly recommend a CGM. When /out/, my insulin sensitivity increases by a factor of 2-8. Predicting how big this effect will be can be nightmarish, and over-reacting to highs or lows can be worse than the highs/lows themselves.
Riding my bike up a mountain means that a bolus dose of any size is enough to kill me. Last week, 1 unit of humalog was enough to take my blood glucose from ~250 mg/dL down to 100, while eating something like 80 carbs. Resting, without having exercised the entire day, it's more like 1 unit:40 mg/dL.
Dinners during /out/ings are a bit more predictable, at 1 unit:25 carbs, rather than the 1 unit:10 carbs I use while resting. However, if I exercise for half a day instead of the whole day, it's somewhere in between, and that's hard to predict.
My goal is normally to find a basal dose that will decrease my blood sugar very slightly on its own, so I need to eat every few hours.
>>1229214I'm that guy from /n/. I just got back from a 660 mile bike trip over my spring break (pic related). I've put nearly 50,000 miles on my bicycle since I got it in early 2012, roughly 30,000 of that being touring and 100% alone/unsupported.
