The pipe is a carburetor-like design that takes proprietary filters to work-thankfully Carey is still around to supply them. There are air gaps at the far end of the mouthpiece that pull in air should you draw too hard, and the filter absorbs excess moisture more than anything else. Like most carb pipes, getting it going it is easier if you cover up the holes when lighting; I only thought about that afterward.
It all makes for a dry smoke that doesn't wreck the flavor of the tobacco by getting too hot.
It's a lot better than I was expecting.
