Actually we've already made huge changes in diet and habits over few last years. We actually buy a lot of homegrowned from friends and farmer's market. I just need to push my habbits more, wife is already there.
Pros:
Being jack of a trades and a handyman should help, as well both of us growing in town houses with traditional gardens (at my house we even had chickens which I've learned to kill and prepare), we should also be able to afford buying old house with a patch of land. I can do renovations myself. I even know A LOT of wild edibles. We know people who homegrow part time including my parents-in-law.
Cons:
My biggest concerns are: I have no knowledge how grow food and raise animals. The things you've wrote about choosing property for example: I'm clueless. I've seen how it's done for 20 years and helped a lot but I wasn't me doing it.
Second big concern is quitting a job. I was thinking about crafting some things for sale to be able to pay taxes and bills. Will it be enough to feed my family?
So I guess my goals untill kids are old enough and my mother gets so sick she needs to live with us are:
Learn a lot of theory, test as much as possible in small scale so I will see with my own eyes it's possible. I know I can raise chickens as they are low maintenance. We have old dog. I magine taking care of him can't be much different from keeping a goat.
People dumber than me were doing it for millenia, without all the knowledge there is now. How hard can it be right?
Anyone else having something to add?
