I just suck it up and pay $30 dollars a year to use Alltrails Pro so I can download custom maps on my phone ahead of time or just use their pre-made .gpx routing or sometimes I import .gpx hiking track files as custom maps.
I use caltopo desktop to plan on my computer but alltrails is mostly idiot-proof and it is nice I can search by elevation gain, distance, features such as view, river, waterfall, etc.
Often they have sales and it is only 15 dollars.
>>2313431Importing .gpx files or whatever you use to define the track where you will be hiking is a good feature. Garmin software is just much more annoying at doing that and you can't really do it on the fly like you can with a smartphone and alltrails.
