like for one example, if im just planning on a day hike. i go prepared to survive being stuck outdoors for the nite., ie: i will bring two light sources. at least one knife, two ways of making fire. enough food, water, enough proper clothing to endure if cold for an emergency overnite stay., no tent though.
But even before that i always bring a compass and a good topographic map of area. and know how to use compass with said map.
Orienteering inna woods with map and compass can save you if you ever become lost.
but of course, orienteering with map and compass should *prevent* you from becoming lost in the first place i guess.
