Go for leather and avoid gortex and other synthetics. Leather is usually quite breathable in the heat - I've worn pic related in the Australian summer and they've been fine. Boots should be the most expensive component of your hiking kit, probably around $200-$300 for a good pair that won't fuck up your feet.
