Midwest. Low cost of living, open/huntable land, and general lack of people. I'd spend half my grand on gear (bag, bivvi, pack, gun, jacket, etc) and save the rest to buy some food here and there. A lot of foraging for food, but not all together impossible to simply rove around and enter civilization solely for staples (salt, oats, bullets)
